Traditionally, each month is represented by a particular birthstone. This practice has its origins dating back thousands of years. Different gemstones were once associated with specific tribes, then with signs of the zodiac, then with the months of the year. As shown in the chart below, the Oriental birthstone list originated over a thousand years ago in Tibet. Eastern Indian astrological practices have also identified birthstones for over a thousand years. In Europe, just prior to the Renaissance, another list of birthstones began to be used by jewelers there. The Traditional list below is a compilation of differing lists, depending on the nationality of the jewelers. The Modern birthstone list was adopted in 1912 by the American National Association of Jewelers.
