Announce your time constraint: When starting your conversation, open with a statement that you only have a minute. By making this warning right up front, most people will catch the subtle hint and not detain you with idle chatter. Just announcing your time constraint will make it easier to exit the phone conversation easily. Use voicemail: If you are just calling with info that needs no immediate response, why not call their voicemail directly or have their secretary put you through to their voicemail? This allows you to complete your thoughts without interruption, objection or comments from the other party. So many times we just want to forward a small detail and taking advantage of voicemail or leaving a message with a secretary or receptionist will work nicely and make the best use of your time. Write an email: The great thing about email is that you can handle it on your timeframe within work hours or not. You also have a record of your communication, which can be a great tool. Just like voicemail, there are no interruptions, objections or comments to deal with. These are simple and fairly obvious tips to help you. Even still we may at times find ourselves trapped in conversations that seemingly have no end when we can least spare the time. In our busy world, taking advantage of ANY time savings can increase our productivity and make us more professional.
